Agentic Commerce

Findability and exposure when AI agents shop on intent.

Feeds the hub

Intent-driven visits and orders. Runs on the hub's product data and feeds.

How it works in the model

Independent AI agents (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini) turn a shopper's intent into a recommendation, then route the shopper to where they buy.

Example: "Hair routine for dry colored hair". The agent routes to the D2C shop, a hair pro partner or retail.

Benefits: from keyword search to intent search; a hygiene factor; relevance on emerging platforms.

How it feeds the hub

Agents surface the brand on intent. Some send the shopper to the shop. Some close the sale themselves. Either way, the shop's product data and feeds decide whether the brand is found.

Walmart opens an Agent Gateway and sets terms for AI agents shopping for customers

Walmart launched its Agent Gateway, an MCP server that lets approved AI agents search Walmart and Sam's Club and buy on a customer's behalf. Agent Profiles, rolling out within a month, give each agent its own profile with purchase history kept separate, approval for every order or a spending limit the customer sets. New terms say agents never get card details, may only act as the shopper intends, Walmart's returns apply, and agents that break the rules are blocked. Amazon, by contrast, is blocking third-party agents such as Meta's Muse.

So whatThe biggest US retailer now writes the rules for agent shopping on its own site; brands should expect agents to arrive through gateways with permissions, not by scraping.

Vercel and Shopify ship an agent-ready storefront template

Vercel Shop, an open-source Next.js storefront for Shopify, is now generally available alongside the rebuilt Hydrogen SDK. The same product URL serves a visual page to people and machine-readable product data (price, availability, options) to agents, and it exposes Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) tools via MCP so agents can search, build carts and get a checkout link on the merchant's own domain.

So whatAgent readiness is turning into standard storefront plumbing that brands can own, not a platform-only feature.

Retailers split on how far to let AI agents in

QVC and HSN let agents complete purchases; Tapestry sells Coach and Kate Spade via Google AI Mode and Gemini but keeps agents off its own checkout over fraud and inventory-hoarding concerns; Amazon blocks outside agents while building its own; Walmart hands Gemini shoppers to its Sparky agent. About 61M US consumers start shopping research with AI.

So whatThe real decision is not whether to allow agents but where the purchase and its data land.
